The South Western Board of School Directors has reviewed the results of the focus group discussions and the resumes of the candidates who have applied for the position. The Board is developing the logistics for first round interviews and making preliminary preparations to include stakeholders in the second round interview process that will transpire in the next few weeks.

The South Western Board of School Directors has just begun the process of searching for the district’s next superintendent. In the coming weeks, we will want to involve other stakeholders in focus group discussion about the future of SWSD! KEY PROVISIONS OF THE JOB DESCRIPTION
South Western School District

The superintendent is employed for a period of three, four, or five years, with the salary and benefits determined annually by the board – in appropriate consultation with the candidate. Superintendents in Pennsylvania must hold a letter of eligibility and/or otherwise hold the appropriate qualifications/credentials to serve as superintendent. Candidates with classroom teaching and school administration experiences as well as an earned doctorate (although not mandated) will be given comprehensive consideration by the Board. The position reports to the Board of School Directors, and supervises various administrators in the district, while indirectly supervising all other and indirectly supervising all other employees of the organization. In addition to being the professional advisor and chief executive officer to the Board of School Directors, the superintendent provides efficient leadership, direction, and coordination for district personnel, programs, and activities. Below is a partial list of key performance responsibilities:

  1. Provide informed professional leadership to the board and staff in areas of program development, implementation, evaluation, improvement, and finance;
  2. Supervise the organization and implementation of all programs and personnel in accordance with state and federal law and regulations and the policies and guidelines of the board of school directors;
  3. Oversee the selection, deployment, and supervision of all district employees and represent the board to these employees;
  4. Lead in the development and maintenance of a two-way system of internal and external communications for the district;
  5. Lead in the development and maintenance of cooperation between schools and community; and
  6. Perform other duties assigned by the board which relate to the operation of the school system and comply with the all relevant statutes in Pennsylvania.

SOUTH WESTERN SCHOOL DISTRICT
Superintendent Job Posting

The South Western School District (SWSD) in York County, PA is searching for their next superintendent. The district serves 4,300 students, maintains a small town, caring atmosphere, and provides a tremendous portfolio of academic/extracurricular offerings. SWSD is located just minutes from the Maryland border, 45 minutes from Baltimore and around one hour from Washington, D.C. With 302 teachers, 24 administrators, and a highly capable group of support staff, the district serves families in three townships. The successful candidate must:

  • Display proven educational leadership skills to continue to advance student success at SWSD
  • Show the connection between previous leadership positions and success in leading SWSD
  • Coordinate the continued development of a healthy, caring, mission-driven culture that pursues excellence
  • Continue to enhance an exceptional teaching corps and a deeply respected leadership team at comes and stays at SWSD
  • Display excellent communication skills as defined by persuasive oral, written and interpersonal abilities;
  • Have effective skills in overseeing school budgeting and finance;
  • Be skilled in cultivating positive labor relations (which currently exists); connections with the media, school organizations and community groups

SWSD (www.swsd.k12.pa.us) has had just four superintendents in the last 55 years! This speaks to the position’s potential for stability. The district is in a strong financial position and has updated facilities.
