March 24th Parent Message

As of our last communication on the afternoon of Friday, March 13, Governor Wolf issued a directive to close all schools and limit public contact.  Since that directive from Governor Wolf, our administrative team has convened to discuss the next steps we will be taking as a district.  One of the first, and most important, decisions we can make is to provide a balanced lunch to our students.  We are announcing today the district will be providing a grab and go lunch for any child who is 18 years of age or younger beginning Wednesday, March 18, 2020.  The location of the grab and go lunch will be the high school main entrance and the distribution times will be from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM during the weekdays.  Please note this service will not be available on the weekend.  If you are picking up a lunch, the child who is receiving the lunch must be present in the car at the time of the pick-up.  Meals must be consumed off site.  The district has put a flier with additional information regarding this service on our district website in the Coronavirus folder as well as on our district Facebook page.  This service will continue until further notice.

Earlier today we received additional guidance from Governor Wolf and the CDC regarding non-essential businesses and gathering of groups larger than 10 people.  As a result of this guidance, all district offices will now be closed to the public.  If you need to call the district for assistance, please contact our receptionist at 717-632-2500 between the hours of 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM Monday thru Friday.  The receptionist will direct your message to the appropriate person and you should receive a response within two business days.  You are also able to contact district and building administrators via their email address.  The email address for each administrator is as follows:  firstname_lastname@southwesternsd.org.  All administrators will be checking their email accounts on a regular basis each day.  Again, you can expect a response to your message within two (2) business days.  There will be a minimum of five (5) administrators on site each day in the district to maintain building security, receive packages and respond to any unexpected needs.

If your student has medication stored in the nurse’s office of the building they attend, and it is medication you will need during the closure, we are asking you contact your building principal via email and they will make arrangements for you to pick up the medication.  If you need to have immediate access to the medication, please contact the district receptionist and we will make arrangements for you to pick up the medicine as soon as possible.

As we move toward our anticipated reopening date of March 30, 2020, we want to again remind our families and students that no school work will be required prior to March 30, 2020.  We would encourage our families to have students read or be read to on a daily basis.  Also, there are a wide variety of free educational resources students can access during our closure.

As stated earlier, this situation continues to change each day, and for that reason you can anticipate increased communication from the district.  This may include updates to the district schedule, possible delays to our anticipated re-opening and other potential unknowns.  Once again, thank you for all of your support for our students and our staff.
