Coronavirus - May 21 Update #13
Posted on 05/21/2020

I hope this final communication finds you preparing for a well-deserved holiday weekend. Yes, I said the final communication from me for the 2019-2020 school year. It is hard to imagine we are now entering the last week of our current school year. I often tell my daughter and son, your children will someday read about this crisis and how the actions of so many helped us get through these challenging times. This generation of students will certainly go down in history, and I think we can all agree they have demonstrated tremendous strength, flexibility and resiliency. One more thank you to all of our students, families and teachers for all of your support and commitment to the community – it has been unwavering.

I also want to provide a brief update on a topic I know many of you are more than likely starting to think about – next year. At this time we are hopeful and preparing for an on-time start to the 2020-2021 school year. We anticipate students returning to school on Monday, August 24, 2020. However, we are not sure if it will look similar to years past. Therefore, I would like to make all of you aware of our ongoing preparations. The following steps are taking place:
1. We have an administrative team dedicated to planning for the start of the 2020-2021 school year. This team is currently reviewing all relevant information and national research regarding the opening of public schools in August.
2. We have administrators serving on state wide committees engaging in discussions and preparing recommendations for the reopening of schools in the fall.
3. District administrators are working collectively with colleagues from across York County on plans/recommendations to reopen schools in the fall.
4. Our Director of Facilities, Business Administrator and Director of Safety, Security and Accountability are serving on a York County Emergency Management Committee to evaluate resources and procedures for reopening in the fall.
5. Our Athletic Director is working with colleagues and the PIAA regarding procedures for the health and safety of our student athletes if and when competition resumes.

While we all understand the importance of restarting school, I also want to be thorough and deliberate in our planning. I understand this communication will likely generate more questions. We may not be able to answer many of your questions at this time, as there are still procedures to work out (i.e. transportation with social distancing), I want to assure you our work will continue as the summer continues to advance. It is my goal to have a defined plan ready for our families by mid-July. I would encourage you to continue checking our district website and your email over the summer months for updates.

As we enter the final week of our school year, our food service department will serve meals on Wednesday, May 27, from 11:00 to 1:00 in front of the high school. This will be the last meal service for the school year and summer. We will continue to support families by providing information on agencies who can provide assistance over the summer months.

I would once again like to take a moment and thank Ms. Gauss and her team for all of their efforts during this crisis. They are an amazing group of individuals who have exemplified the idea of others before self. If you have a chance to thank them at some point over the summer, please express your gratitude to these wonderful people.

Beginning this week, the district will no longer keep the distance learning survey active. Our team has been able to acquire a great deal from the information provided by our families who were able to participate in the weekly survey. The information collected has been valuable. Our distance learning website will remain active into the early summer so we can provide building updates to our families. Please be sure to check back for updates on a regular basis.

Finally, you will hear from your building principal regarding the return of student materials. The process is expected to begin the first week of June. This will also be a time when students will be able to return district owned property (i.e. textbook, uniforms, etc.). As always, if you have any questions, please contact your student’s building principal for additional clarification.

I have communicated with all of you many times this school year, and I have shared a great deal of information in my messages, but I hope the one message that stays with all of you today and beyond: Thank you to each and every one of you. You have made all the difference!

Stay safe and stay healthy.
